Universities and scholarship committees seek students who give back to their community. In addition to the top ten reasons to volunteer (see tab) volunteering gives you experience to add to your resume. The Academy does not require you to do a certain number of hours to graduate, however The Academy recognizes the importance of volunteering and invites you to contact local organizations for volunteer opportunities (see below).
Tracking Hours:
Make sure to track your hours. Carry this document with you and give it to your counselor every so often to scan and keep a copy for you in case it gets misplaced. The more organized you can be about your hours, the better!
- Contact local non profits (Orangewood Childrens Foundation, Boys and Girls Club, Think Together, KidWorks) and ask if you can volunteer during the summers or click here for more locations.
- Your local Public library
- Contact your previous elementary and middle school teachers and ask if they need assistance with tutoring or over the summer
- Talk to a resource staff member at your church and see if you can donate your time in events, or during service
